Most prestigious construction award won by futuristic Hungarian bridge
Monostori Bridge won the Építőipari Nívó Díj. The name of the award the Hungarian bridge received is hard to translate, but it is close to Construction Excellence Award. But what does this prestigious acknowledgement actually mean?
In 2021, the Monostori Bridge – Komárom-Komárno Danube Bridge received the Construction Excellence Award in the Transport Facility category, wrote Nemzeti Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. on their Facebook page. In their post, they added that the awards were given based on the decision of a panel of 18 judges.
The Facebook post contains information about the importance of bridges in Hungary. According to the caption, Hungarian bridge construction is currently living its golden age. This is indicated not only by the number of new bridges but also by the fact that many larger bridges are not only built by bridge designers but also architects.
The Monostori Bridge, which won the prestigious acknowledgement, was built with a technology that was never used in Hungary prior to this bridge’s construction.

The bridge was built in the course of three years and it is 600 meters long, wrote 24.hu. The architectural site connects the Slovak Révkomárom and the Hungarian Komárom. Thus the bridge connects two countries as well. It was inaugurated in 2020 in the presence of the Hungarian and the Slovak head of government.
The bridge was built using European, Slovak and Hungarian funds amounting to EUR 91.2 million.
The two governments agreed to build a bridge years ago, in 2012. The permits to start the construction works were issued in 2014 by competent authorities and the project received partial financing support from the CEF fund. “The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key EU funding instrument to promote growth, jobs and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment at European level.
It supports the development of high-performing, sustainable and efficiently interconnected trans-European networks in the fields of transport, energy and digital services. CEF investments fill the missing links in Europe’s energy, transport and digital backbone.” – writes ec.europa.eu.
The construction started in 2017. It is the tallest bridge on the Danube and the 10th bridge crossing the river in Slovakia.
“On 17 October, 2017, in the presence of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the foundation stone of the new bridge was laid in front of the Danube bastion of the Monostori Fortress in South Komárom.” – wrote felvidek.ma.
